It’s not a revelation to say that at times it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day. And with so much going on, being a college student on a campus filled with thousands of other students and events happening on seemingly every corner, it can be easy to get tunnel vision and focus only on ourselves. I know I’ve definitely fallen into that trap, getting so consumed in my own work and justifying flaky behavior with the fact that my education is what’s most important. I mean, hey, with so many people and so much going on, there’s no way I can make much of a difference anyway, right?
Well, not exactly. Making an impact doesn’t mean making sure everyone on campus knows your name. Now, being in my third year of college, I’ve realized that when I look back at everything I’ve done so far, the moments that have stuck with me the most are the ones I didn’t expect to even remember at the time. For example, something as simple as deciding to step out of my comfort zone and talk to a person I had never met before led me to find a great Christian community I meet up with weekly now, even though at the time I was just expecting a one-off conversation. Even with a packed schedule, there are a few practical ways I have been able to activate my influence on campus:
1.Get Involved:
Matthew 28:29 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” Connect with the community! The nations can be those around you, so take advantage with that opportunity. Student organizations are a great way to meet new people with similar interests and can become an opportunity for Evangelism
2. Be present:
James 4:14 “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” It’s so easy to get overwhelmed in college, and although it’s definitely easier said than done, give it all to God. Don’t be anxious about what will happen tomorrow, because He already has it all planned out. Instead, be present wherever you are!
3. Be set apart and reflect Christ”
Romans 12:2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” Goes along with the second point, but it really applies to everything! Wherever you find yourself, reflect Christ’s character in it. Being a follower of Christ means being set apart and having the incredible gift of the peace and joy that only comes from Him. Simply being a beacon for Christ’s light to shine can make a significant impact on the people you interact with.
